Mathematics Relays
This major event in the MAT calendar is held annually on the third Sunday in August. Schools can enter teams of four students in Primary (grades 5, 6), Lower Secondary (grades 7, 8), Upper Secondary (grades 9, 10) or Senior Secondary (grades 11, 12). Entries in the Primary and Lower Secondary divisions are restricted to two teams per school.
The Relays are held simultaneously in three main venues around the state – Hobart, Launceston and the NW coast. Depending on demand, a fourth venue on the West coast may be brought into play.
Entry fees are fixed by the MAT executive and reviewed from time to time. The current fee structure is:
MAT individual and school members: maximum two teams per school at member rate of $11.00 per team (GST inclusive)
All other teams: $22.00 per team (GST inclusive)
The 2008 Mathematics Relays was held on Sunday, August 10th at Rosny College (South), Newstead College (North) and The Don College (North-West).

Problem Solving Competition
The MAT has conducted the Schools Problem Competition for almost 40 years. The Competition has three sections:
Junior Year 7 and 8 2 hours
Intermediate Year 9 and 10 2 hours
Senior Year 11 and 12 3 hours
The Competition consists of twelve questions for each section and students are required to present written solutions to the problem, including their working. Participating students receive certificates of participation, and money prizes are awarded for first, second and third, Best Year 7, 9 and 11 as well as for outstanding achievement.
Entry forms are posted to all secondary schools in February. The entry fee is $1.10 including GST. Past papers and solution are published each year in the Association’s Competition Yearbook. ML Urquhart Mathematics Competition
This Competition is for nominated Year 11 and 12 students and is named in honour of the late ML (Mac) Urquhart, Foundation Chairman of MAT and former Reader in Mathematics at the University of Tasmania. Held in August each year this Competition is the most mathematically demanding of competitions conducted by the Association. Students have three hours in which to attempt five questions. The winner of the Competition receives the Urquhart Medal, a framed certificate and prize money. Certificates and money are also awarded to students deserving of an Honourable Mention.
