Mathematical Association of Tasmania

Welcome to the website of the Mathematical Association of Tasmania. This site contains valuable information for teachers of mathematics from Kindergarten to year 12, and for anyone interested in mathematics in Tasmania.

The Mathematical Association of Tasmania (MAT) was founded in 1961 and is a non-profit organisation supporting Mathematics Teachers from K-12. MAT aims to link teachers through association activities, our annual conference, and regular communication. Through our activities and services we aim to promote mathematics education and support teachers in engaging their students in the learning of mathematics.

MAT is an affiliate of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT) http://www.aamt.edu.au and also of The Network of Education Associations in Tasmania (NEAT).

2011 Events

  • Special Event:  "The Power and Beauty of Geometry: Reasoning and Sense Making"  Professor Mike Shaughnessy, Friday the 1st of July, 2011

Venue:  Conference rooms, University of Tasmania

Cost: MAT Members - free,  non-members  - $20

(Prof) Mike Shaughnessy is President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in the US. He is a keynote speaker at the AAMT conference in Alice Springs the week after his visit to Tasmania.  He is very well known internationally for his research and professional work in statistics and geometry.

As Reasoning, Understanding, and Problem Solving are among the Proficiencies in the National Curriculum: Mathematics, this talk will be relevant to Tasmanian Teachers at  all levels.

Mike will be presenting his talk in Hobart but this will be available via video conference to the North and North West. The meeting will start at 4:00 with afternoon tea before hand at all 3 venues.  Mike will answer questions and welcome discussion among the venues.

Attendees should confirm their attendance by emailing the contact person for each venue

Launceston:  A Block, Room A023 (next to Degrees restaurant)   Rosemary.Callingham@utas.edu.au

Hobart: Underground Seminar Room, Morris Miller Library B102  Jane.Watson@utas.edu.au

Due to the time of day of this presentation CH3CH2 OH may be available at some venues!! But probably not in large quantities as it may inhibit reasoning and sense making in adults.

  •  Mathematics Relays 2011

This year the relay will be held on Sunday, August 7th at Rosny College (South), Newstead College (North) and Burnie High School (North-West).  Schools enter teams of four students in Primary (grades 5, 6), Lower Secondary (grades 7, 8), Upper Secondary (grades 9, 10) or Senior Secondary (grades 11, 12)..

Entry form for 2011 Relay Sunday 7th August 2011

Sample questions and solution papers are now available! See Student Activities

  • National Mathematics Day 2011

This event will be held on Friday 20th May (see Activities for further information)

  • MAT Mathematics Problem Competition 2011

For more than 40 years the Mathematical Association of Tasmania has conducted the MAT Mathematics Problem Competition for Tasmanian students in Years 7 to 12. Through this Competition some outstanding Mathematics students have been identified and, for other students, the Competition has sparked an interest in Mathematics. The event consists of a set of mathematical problems which aim to test the student’s logic. There are normally 12 questions for each of the three divisions (7-8, 9-10, 11-12).

The 2011 competition will be held on Thursday, 7th July.

  • ML Urquhart Competition

Held in August each year this Competition is the most mathematically demanding of competitions conducted by the Association.  In 2011, the competition will take place on Tuesday August 9th.

News

  • NAPLAN (National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy) results have been distributed to parents. The release of the summary report has resulted in a range of comments in the media. The AAMT's views are detailed in the Position Paper which can be downloaded from http://www.aamt.edu.au/Documentation/Statements .
